As we have seen with Oprah, excess weight gain may
be an issue related to thyroid dysfunction, typically hypo or low-functioning. Whereas difficulty putting on weight
may be related to a hyper-functioning thyroid. Anxiety, fatigue, low energy, hair loss, brittle
nails, bone or joint issues, sensitivity to cold, eyes that appear to protrude, or a lump in the throat known as goiter
.... all may be due to a thyroid disorder. Smoking often accompanies
these conditions with great difficulty quitting.
The symptoms of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism may exist even when lab results display
within the "normal" range, and prescribed drugs at best only address part of the body's needs for proper
hormonal balance. Thyroid conditions can also be affected by food choices. Baked goods often contain bromides
which may subdue thyroid function by bonding at iodine bonding sites. Soy, broccoli, cauliflower and other foods can
have a similar effect.
